Why Personalize Your Pencils with Washi Tape? The Benefits of This Simple Craft
Beyond the sheer joy of creating something beautiful, personalizing pencils with washi tape offers a multitude of benefits for both children and parents:
- Encourages Creativity & Self-Expression: Kids can choose their favorite colors, patterns, and combinations, making each pencil a unique reflection of their personality. This fosters artistic development and allows them to take pride in their work.
- Boosts Excitement for School: New, custom school supplies can make the transition back to school much more appealing. When children have a hand in decorating their tools, they feel a greater sense of ownership and excitement about using them.
- Develops Fine Motor Skills: The act of carefully wrapping washi tape around a pencil helps to refine hand-eye coordination and dexterity, crucial skills for young learners.
- Affordable Personalization: Washi tape is an inexpensive craft supply, making this a budget-friendly way to customize school essentials without breaking the bank. It’s a great alternative to purchasing pricier themed pencils.
- Reduces Waste: Instead of discarding plain or slightly worn pencils, this craft gives them a new lease on life, promoting a sense of resourcefulness.
- Engaging Screen-Free Activity: In an increasingly digital world, hands-on crafts like this provide a valuable opportunity for children to step away from screens and engage in tangible, creative play.

Choosing Your Tools: Pencils, Pens, and the Magic of Washi Tape
For this project, we opted for mechanical pencils, primarily because their smooth, cylindrical plastic bodies provide an excellent surface for the tape to adhere evenly. However, don’t feel limited! You can just as easily use traditional no. 2 wooden pencils, or even plain pens. The beauty of this craft lies in its adaptability. Whatever writing tool you choose to embellish, the result is sure to be super cute and uniquely yours!
- Mechanical Pencils: Often have a smooth, consistent barrel, making them very easy to wrap. They also come in various colors, which can peek through the tape for interesting effects.
- Traditional Wooden Pencils: A classic choice. You might need to be mindful of the hexagonal shape, ensuring the tape overlaps smoothly. You can choose to wrap over the eraser or leave it exposed.
- Pens: Most pens with a straight, cylindrical barrel are perfect candidates for a washi tape makeover.

The Wonders of Washi Tape: Your Go-To Crafting Companion
Washi tape holds a special place in the hearts of crafters, and it’s certainly one of my absolute favorite craft supplies. Its unique properties make it ideal for countless DIY projects, especially for transforming everyday items like pencils. What makes washi tape so fantastic?
- Inexpensive & Accessible: Washi tape is incredibly affordable, allowing you to stock up on a wide variety of patterns and colors without a significant investment. You can find it at nearly any craft store, stationery shop, or even large retailers.
- Easy to Use: Unlike traditional sticky tapes, washi tape is made from natural fibers (often bamboo or hemp) and is designed to be repositionable. This means if you make a mistake while wrapping, you can gently peel it off and reapply without damaging the surface of your pencil or leaving sticky residue.
- Tears Easily: Washi tape can often be torn by hand, eliminating the need for scissors for rough cuts, which is great for younger children. For cleaner edges, however, scissors are recommended.
- Vast Array of Designs: From polka dots and stripes to florals, geometrics, glitter, and even holographic finishes, the design possibilities are endless. This allows for unparalleled customization and creativity.
- Versatile: While perfect for pencils, washi tape is also fantastic for decorating notebooks, binders, gift wrapping, card making, scrapbooking, wall art, and so much more. It’s a true multi-purpose crafting material.
I always keep a dedicated drawer full of washi tape on hand, ensuring I’m ready for any spontaneous craft project. If your personal stash is currently lacking, replenishing it is easy. You can pick up individual rolls or themed sets at your local craft store. Personally, I find the best value and widest selection when I order large sets of washi tape on Amazon. This way, I can usually grab lots of different patterns and colors at a really good price, ensuring I have options for every creative whim.
I sincerely hope you and your children enjoy this fun and easy back-to-school craft. May your personalized pencils bring extra joy and motivation throughout the academic year!

Equipment
-
1 pair of sharp scissors (for clean cuts)
-
Optional: Craft knife (for very precise edges, adult supervision required)
Supplies

6
mechanical pencils
or traditional wooden pencils/pens -
1
washi tape
or multiple rolls for varied designs -
Clear sealant
(optional, for extra durability)
Instructions
-
1. Prepare and Wrap Your Pencil: Choose your first pencil and a roll of washi tape. Starting from either the top or bottom of the pencil, slowly and carefully begin to wrap the tape around it. For a neat finish, ensure you slightly overlap each turn of the tape as you work your way down the pencil’s shaft. This overlapping ensures full coverage and prevents any gaps where the original pencil color might show through. If you’re using a mechanical pencil and want to keep its cap or eraser visible, start wrapping just below that section.
-
2. Finish the Wrap and Trim: Continue wrapping until you reach the desired endpoint on the pencil. Once fully covered, use your scissors to cut off the excess tape cleanly. Press down firmly along the tape to ensure it adheres well and smooth out any small air bubbles with your fingers. Take your time to make the ends as tidy as possible. Repeat this process to decorate as many pencils as you like, experimenting with different colors and patterns for each one!
-
3. Add Personal Touches (Optional): For an extra layer of customization, consider wrapping a second, thinner strip of washi tape over your first layer to create unique patterns or stripes. You can also mix different tapes on one pencil for a patchwork effect, or even add small stickers over the washi tape. For added durability and to prevent the tape from peeling, especially for younger children, you can apply a thin coat of clear craft sealant (like Mod Podge) over the wrapped pencil and let it dry completely.
-
4. Enjoy Your New Supplies! Once your pencils are complete and any sealant has dried, they are ready to be used. Enjoy the vibrant colors and personalized touch they bring to your schoolwork or everyday tasks. These make fantastic gifts for classmates or teachers too!
