North Jersey’s Premier Dining Destinations: A Curated List

It’s important to note that the following selections for my top restaurants in North Jersey are presented in no particular order. Each establishment holds a special place in my heart for its unique offerings and dining atmosphere. Much love and appreciation to them all!

1. Ridgewood Country Pancake House – Bergen County

For those who wake up with a serious appetite, the Ridgewood Country Pancake House is an absolute must-visit and is bound to become your new go-to breakfast spot. This Ridgewood institution takes generous portions to a whole new level; their pancakes are famously larger than one’s head – a delightful and delicious exaggeration that truly holds weight! With an astonishing array of over 100 pancake varieties, alongside an extensive menu of French toast, waffles, and omelette options, it’s the quintessential place to kickstart your day with a hearty and satisfying meal. While they do offer lunch and dinner, I confess, I can never resist their breakfast menu, which remains a consistent favorite for its sheer variety and incredible taste.

2. Sol Mar – Essex County

Sol Mar – Newark, NJ

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Newark’s Ironbound district, Sol Mar stands as an undisputed beacon for authentic Portuguese cuisine. This establishment masterfully caters to various dining preferences, from the more relaxed and lively atmosphere of its bar area to the sophisticated elegance of its formal Vila Nova dining room. Whether you’re seeking a casual meal or a romantic dinner, Sol Mar consistently delivers. Personally, I gravitate towards the convivial ambiance of the bar, but for a truly special date night, the dining room offers an impeccable setting.

Their culinary prowess shines through in their fantastic seafood dishes, which are always fresh and expertly prepared. Beyond the sea, their chicken and steak options are equally impressive, cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. My absolute favorite is the succulent chicken in garlic sauce, a dish I invariably pair with a pitcher (or two!) of their celebrated, incredibly delicious sangria. Dining at Sol Mar is not just a meal; it’s an immersive cultural experience that brings the vibrant tastes of Portugal to North Jersey.

3. Sanducci’s Trattoria – Bergen County

When the craving for authentic Italian cuisine strikes, Sanducci’s Trattoria in River Edge consistently rises to the top as Bergen County’s finest. The restaurant’s Tuscan-inspired dining room exudes a warm and inviting charm, setting the stage for an exceptional meal. Their extensive menu features an exquisite array of pasta, pizza, chicken, veal, steak, and seafood dishes, each crafted with a dedication to traditional Italian flavors and techniques, easily ranking among the best in New Jersey. Indeed, Sanducci’s reputation is well-earned, having been voted Bergen County’s #1 Italian Restaurant in 2017 by Bergen County Magazine, a testament to their consistent quality.

Having been a loyal patron with my family for many years, I can confidently say I’ve never encountered a dish I didn’t adore. My personal favorites include the delightful farfalle con vodka & pepe, a creamy and flavorful pasta dish, and the classic, perfectly executed chicken francaise. An added bonus: Sanducci’s is a BYOB establishment, so remember to bring a bottle or two of your favorite wine to complement your dinner. For those seeking a midday feast, their buffet lunch special comes highly recommended, offering a fantastic opportunity to sample a variety of their delectable offerings.

4. Pancho’s Burritos – Bergen County & Essex County

For an authentic and utterly satisfying Mexican food experience, Pancho’s Burritos is an exceptional choice, boasting locations in both New Milford (Bergen County) and Nutley (Essex County). Pancho’s is renowned for its commitment to fresh ingredients, which truly elevate their generously portioned, oversized burritos. Beyond their famous burritos, the menu is rich with other beloved Mexican staples like tacos, quesadillas, and hearty platters. My top picks are the flavorful chili con carne burrito and the refreshing Mexican taco salad. A meal at Pancho’s always begins delightfully with their freshly made tortilla chips and salsa, brought to every table, and I invariably add a side of their creamy, house-made guacamole for the perfect dip.

Aside from their extensive lunch and dinner offerings, Pancho’s is also celebrated for its fantastic selection of cocktails. With a wide variety of margaritas and tropical drinks, there’s a libation to suit every taste. However, for a truly iconic experience, I highly recommend their signature cocktail: the Super Bulldog. This colossal drink features a frozen sangria margarita, spectacularly adorned with two Coronas inverted and sticking out of the top. While I’m not typically a huge margarita enthusiast, this unique combination of flavors is an irresistible blend that keeps me coming back. With convenient locations, a delicious Mexican feast is never far when you’re exploring Northern New Jersey.

5. Mattar’s Bistro – Warren County

Mattar’s Bistro in Allamuchy is the epitome of a perfect spot for a romantic date night, offering an inviting ambiance and exceptional cuisine. With its spacious dining room and a fully stocked bar, it also serves as an excellent venue for larger gatherings and celebrations. During pleasant weather, the option of outdoor seating on their charming veranda adds an extra layer of enjoyment to the dining experience, making it ideal for a leisurely meal.

My husband and I celebrated our first Valentine’s Day after moving to Warren County at Mattar’s. Even on such a busy evening, we were treated to impeccable service by the attentive wait staff and enjoyed an absolutely terrific meal. We both rave about the steaks at Mattar’s – and coming from me, that’s high praise, as I am notoriously picky about my steak and only order it at a select handful of restaurants. While my husband favors the robust New York Strip, I always opt for the tender Filet Mignon, especially with their exquisite peppercorn sauce – it’s simply delicious! For appetizer lovers, their baked artichoke spinach dip is a mandatory starter. Served with warm pita chips, it’s a creamy, flavorful perfection that sets the tone for a fantastic meal.
